Lisa Aukland was conceived in Bay Shore, New York in 1958. Her two older sisters are her sister, and her younger sister is her mother. Her family was military-oriented and strict. Her father was an Air Force officer so the family lived on bases and traveled a lot. Her family moved to different states every few years, including New York, Georgia and Mississippi. Her family lived for a part of her childhood in Germany.

Aukland was able to participate in the IFBB World Amateur Championships as a representative of the United States women’s weight division. In 1999, she brought back a silver medal from Australia. She finishes 6th at the 2000 World Amateur Championships in Warsaw, Poland. She was employed full-time at the time and took a part-time position teaching college paramedic pharmacycology. Due to the 9/11 events, the 2001 IFBB World Amateur Championships were canceled for American contestants. She won the heavyweight and overall titles in September 2001 at the IFBB North American Championships, Canada. She was awarded her pro card.

Aukland’s best lifts in powerlifting career was 275 lb (125 kg) in the bench, 410 lb (190 kg) deadlift, and 400 lb (180 kg) squat. She competed only in the drug-tested division, and some of those records still hold in Maryland. She was ranked 5th in the 148 lb (67 kg) weight class on “Powerlifting USA” magazine’s list of “Top 20 Women Powerlifters in the United States for the year 2000.”

In February 2002, Aukland attended her first IFBB pro competition, the Ms. International. In 2004, she attended her first Ms. Olympia competition. From 2006 to 2009, she would go on to win every overall title at the Atlantic City Pro. With the exception of the 2003 and 2006 Ms. International, she would rank in the top sixth in every professional competition she attended.

Aukland won the middleweight class and overall title at the 1995 Levrone Classic in Glen Burnie. She then competed at the NPC Jr. Nationals 1996, where she took fourth place. She started a successful run at NPC Team Universe Championships, which is the largest national drug-tested bodybuilding event. In 1998, she finished fourth. However, she went on to win the overall winner in 1999, 2000 and 2001. She realized that she looked very similar to the winning women after competing in Team Universe. She decided to get serious about bodybuilding after she won the show.
