Some of the insulting comments made by Benoit Dorais, an opposition city councillor, about Union Montreal members were directed at Perez. Perez was moved to raise the matter to council to have the rules that govern council proceedings extended to include social media. Perez wasn’t against Twitter being used during council meetings but wanted to ensure that the language used by councilmembers on Twitter was appropriate. Perez’s intervention led to a new policy regarding Twitter use by councillors. Councillors can use Twitter while they are in session but must be careful not to use insulting or unparliamentary language, as per a list of 225 phrases and words that the National Assembly of Quebec has banned. This ruling is thought to be the first in Canada to govern a municipal council.
