Lionel Andre Michel Charbonnier, a former professional footballer from France, was born 25 October 1966. He played as a goalkeeper. After his retirement, he became an assistant football manager at Aceh United of Liga Primer Indonesia. This was the season that saw them fold along with their independent league.
Charbonnier was awarded one cap for France against Italy in 1997 Tournoi de France at Paris’ Parc des Princes stadium. The match ended in a draw of 2-2. Charbonnier was one of three goalkeepers for the French national team, which won the 1998 World Cup in France. Charbonnier was kept out of the starting 11 by Fabien Barrthez.
On 16 July 1998, only four days after the World Cup Final, he joined Rangers of the Scottish Premier League, signed by Dutch manager Dick Advocaat for £1.2 million. Charbonnier wore the number 1 shirt. He suffered a cruciate ligament injury soon after but made 19 appearances throughout the season and was replaced by German Stefan Klos in goal.
When his Rangers contract ended, he joined Lausanne Sports of Switzerland’s top flight (then called Nationalliga A). They finished 11th out of 12 in the 2001–02 season but were relegated alongside FC Sion (8th) and AC Lugano (3rd) due to licensing regulations.
Under Guy Roux, he played for the AJ Auxerre team that won the Ligue 1 title as well as the Coupe de France. He spent eleven seasons in Auxerre, 1987-1998, and then joined Rangers FC, Scotland. In 1998-99, he won the triple of Scottish Premier League, Scottish Cup, and Scottish League Cup. In his second season, they retained the League Cup. After a season playing for Lausanne Sports in the Swiss Super League, he retired in 2002.

Charbonnier was born in Poitiers and trained at AJ Auxerre starting at the age of 16. Charbonnier was a member of their teams that won the Coupe Gambardella, a French national competition for under-19 side players, twice in succession. They beat Montpellier 3-0 in 1985, and Auxerre won the Coupe Gambardella on penalties in 1986 after drawing 0-0 with Nantes. Charbonnier was often second- choice goalkeeper during his first seasons at Auxerre. He was kept out by Bruno Martini, who had been with the club since 1981. Charbonnier lost a semi- final match in the 1992-93 UEFA Cup against Borussia Dortmund. This was after both teams had won their home legs 2-0.
After suffering a serious injury to Martini in the 1993-94 season Charbonnier was made the first choice goalkeeper and won the Coupe de France final that season. Martini transferred to Montpellier in 1995 to take up first-team football because of his form. Auxerre won both the Coupe de France and the Ligue 1 title in 1995-96.
Charbonnier was selected 32 times to the French national team but earned his only full cap in 1997. He was a member of the squad which won the 1998 World Cup on home soil, although he did not play a game.
