She resigned from politics in May 2013 after she failed to win pre-selection because of her decision to not join a Labor party.

Savage was the East Metropolitan Region Member of the Legislative Council, Western Australian State Parliament from 2010 to 2013. She was also appointed to the Uniform Legislation and Statute Review Committee and the Joint Standing Committee on Commissioner for Children and Young People. In early 2012, she assumed the role of Shadow Parliamentary Secretary in Child Protection; Disability Services and Community Services; Early Childhood and Women’s Interests. Savage was the spokesperson for Early Childhood and would also be the author of The Health and Happiness of Our Children, a discussion paper for the Western Australian branch of Labor Party.
