Linda Jayne Copple Trout, an American lawyer and retired judge from Idaho, was born September 1, 1951. She was the first female chief justice of Idaho’s Supreme Court. She was appointed by Governor Cecil Andrus in 1992 as an associate justice. She was also the first woman to serve on that court.
Trout was appointed to the state’s supreme courts by Governor Andrus in 1992. She took office on her 41st Birthday. In 1996, she retained her seat unopposed and in 2002. Trout was elected chief justice in February 1997. She was unanimously elected by the other justices. She served over seven years in this capacity and has now been retired. After fifteen years on the highest court of the state, Trout retired in August 2007 with more than a year remaining in her term. Joel Horton succeeded her.
Trout was admitted to the Idaho bar in 1977. She then worked in private practice for six years in Lewiston. In 1983, she was appointed as a county magistrate judge. She was then elected in 1990 to be a state judge for the second district.
