Linda A. Morabito is one of the most popular and richest Astronomer who was born on November 21, 1953 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Linda A. Morabito, born November 21, 1953, also known as Linda Kelly and Linda Hyder, was an astronomer who discovered volcanic activity in Io, a moon orbiting Jupiter. This discovery was made at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory on March 9, 1979. She was the Cognizant Engineer for the Optical Navigation Image Processing System, (ONIPS), on the Voyager deep-space mission Navigation Team at the time of her discovery. She discovered a cloud 270 km (170 mi) high off the limbs of Io while processing an image of Voyager 1 taken for spacecraft navigation. It was volcanic in origin. It was the first time that active volcanism had been detected from Earth in human history. Some planetary scientists consider her discovery to be the most significant discovery in the history of Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s planetary exploration program. Morabito is an associate professor at Victor Valley College in astronomy. Linda Morabito Meyer is also author of Parallel Universes: A Memoir From the Edges of Space and Time.

Linda Morabito discovered in 2004 that she had suffered severe childhood abuse and was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Dr. Francine Shapiro discovered eye movement desensitization (and reprocessing) as a treatment for PTSD. She is a true champion. Linda Morabito’s childhood abuse and her recovery have given her a strong Christian perspective. Parallel Universes, A Memoir From the Edges of Space and Time by Linda Morabito is both a Christian book and a science and personal memoir. It documents her near-death experiences with her parents, William Franklin Wolsey of the Temple of the More Abundant Living in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada, between 1954 and 1956, her quest for a hidden past, 2003 to 2011, and her major NASA science discovery of 1979.

From 1997 to 2004, she was The Planetary Society’s Manager of Education & Program Development. She led educational outreach for Mars Global Surveyor, which resulted in students being involved in the Mars Exploration Rover mission. In 2007, she was made Associate Professor of Astronomy at Victor Valley College, where she teaches. She was also a guest investigator on the Viking Extended Mission To Mars (1977), where she conducted an experiment on Mars using data from the orbiters and Viking landers. In 2007-2009, she was the Global Curriculum Developer at Lewis Center for Educational Research. She assisted in teaching students around the world how to use a radio telescope for astronomical exploration in conjunction with several NASA missions. These included the Spitzer Space Telescope, Juno mission from Jupiter, and LCROSS mission towards the Moon. For more than 30 years she has been an astronomer lecturer and appeared on numerous science documentaries. She was also a regular science commentator on two national televised talk shows, in Vancouver, British Columbia (1979-1981).

Linda Morabito received a B.S. degree from the University of Southern California. In 1974, Linda Morabito received a B.S. in Astronomy and completed graduate studies in computer science at USC. After receiving her astronomy diploma, she worked as a temporary worker at Jet Propulsion Laboratory. She was promoted to senior engineer in the Outer Planet Satellite Ephemeris Development Group (1974-1981). She discovered an anomalous “crescent”, a limb of Jupiter’s Moon Io, in a Voyager 1 picture of Io, which was taken after the Voyager 1 close encounter. She made a number of hypotheses, and then conducted research to disprove or prove them. Finally, she identified the “crescent”. Morabito was able deduce that the observation was volcanic in origin and a plume erupting on the surface of Io. On March 12, 1979, the world was informed about her discovery.
