Allen and her work were featured in an episode of Heart of a Poet (2006), which was produced by Maureen Judge, a Canadian filmmaker. She is an Ontario College of Art and Design University Faculty of Liberal Studies Professor, where she teaches creative-writing. Recently, she was the Canada Council Writer in Residence for Queen’s University’s Department English. Allen co- produced Blak Wi Blakkk (a 1991 documentary on the Jamaican dub poet Mutabaruka), and also directed it.

After a brief time living in Kitchener, Ontario she settled in Toronto where she received a B.A. degree. After meeting Oku Onuora in Cuba in 1978, she began working in dub poetry. In 1983, she released her first album, Dub Poet: Lillian Allen’s Poetry.
Allen was awarded the Juno Award in 1986 for Best Reggae/Calypso Album, and 1988 for Conditions Critical.
