He joined Conference North side Altrincham for a one-month loan agreement on 22 December 2011. His debut was made on 26/12/12 in the 5-1 victory over Droylsden. Before returning to Blackpool, he made five appearances. He was loaned again to Scottish First Division side Ayr Utilities until the end of the 2012 season. He was joined by fellow Blackpool loanee Adam Dodd in Somerset Park. The next day, he made his debut as a substitute in the 71st minute of a draw with Hamilton Academical. On 11 February, he made his full debut in a 1-1 draw against Queen of the South. He scored his first professional goal a week later, in a 1-1 draw against Ross County at Victoria Park. He played in 19 games and scored one goal before returning home to Blackpool at season’s end. Ayr united also named him young player of year.

Tomsett was born in Ulverston in Cumbria. He played for Blackpool’s junior team for six years before becoming a youth department scholar in May 2009. He made his debut with the first team in the third round against Southampton on 8 January 2011. At the end of the season, he was awarded the Young Player of Year award. On 8 July, he signed a professional contract for 12 months with the Seasiders with an option to extend his contract by one year.

On 4 July 2014, it was announced that Liam had turned down several offers to join Conference North newcomers A.F.C. Fylde following his release from Blackpool.
