Kearney, a Cork City league champion, joined Shelbourne on a free transfer in January 2006. Kearney made only 10 league appearances during the season and scored once. Pat Fenlon, Shelbourne manager, agreed to temporarily freeze Liam’s contract while he was away from football for a few weeks during 2006 to regain his focus and hunger. Kearney was able to return in time to play left wing in a friendly against Sunderland, an English Championship side. Kearney did not make it into the first team after his return but was awarded his second league winners medal, which Shelbourne won on the final day. His time in Dublin was described by him as “disappointing”.
Derry City signed Kearney on the first day of the 2009 January transfer window. He started off well to his career at the Brandywell, however he sustained a broken leg during a match in May against Galway United and was out for three months. By the end of July it was still unclear as to when he would return. He also missed Derry’s UEFA Europa League games, which saw them knock out Skonto Riga and run CSKA Sofia close. He expressed his disappointment at not being able to participate in Europe however he said once he regained fitness he was looking forward to helping the Candystripes challenge for the League of Ireland title.
Kearney signed for Australian Victorian Premier League side Dandenong Thunder SC in January 2011.
Kearney was reunited with Cork City in Ireland after his return to Ireland in 2003. He made his Republic of Ireland U21 debut in 2004 against the Italian opposition. Kearney won seven U21 caps while Cork scored once in a 1-0 win over Italy. Cork City and Kearney launched a campaign in 2005 that would see them win the league title. They beat Derry City 2-0, where Kearney scored the second goal. After starting as an unseeded team in the first round of qualifying, the club advanced to the First Round of UEFA Cup. They eliminated FK Ekranas, a Lithuanian side, and Djurgardens IF, the eventual champions, before being eliminated by Slavia Prague. Kearney moved to Shelbourne after receiving an offer from Dutch Premier Division side Heerenveen.
