Hinphey was called up first to the Derry Senior football panel for the 2006 season in November 2005. He was part the Derry team which won the 2008 National League, where Derry defeated Kerry in the final. Hinphey was injured in the pelvis (osteopubis) and missed the first round at the 2008 Ulster Senior Football Championship. He would be out for the remainder of the season. He was able to make a faster recovery after being detected early and receiving the appropriate treatment. His club returned in the Derry Championship against Bellaghy, on July 1. He will be travelling around Australia for six month from March 2009 to September 2009, so he has decided not to participate in the 2009 panel.
Hinphey has represented Ulster in the Railway Cup and was captain of the province in 2009.
Hinphey, a relative latecomer to football was awarded the MacRory Cup and Hogan Cups by St. Pat’s Maghera in 2003.

Hinphey won 2001 the Ulster Minor Hurling Championship together with Derry minors. In 2003, he made his Senior Derry debut against Kerry at the age of 18. Hinphey represented Ulster, Derry and even captained Ireland under 21 level of hurling. He was part the 2006 Nicky Rackard Cup-winning Derry side. For 2008, he decided to focus on football and opted out from the Derry hurling team. In 2009, he returned to the Hurling Panel, but he was only available for the National Hurling League’s first two rounds. He decided to travel Australia in March. After arriving in Sydney, he signed up for the Sydney Shamrocks hurling club. He played brilliantly at the centre back and they won the Central Coast tournament, the first NSW competition.
Hinphey enjoyed a successful underage career at Kevin Lynchs. Hinphey won the Ulster Minor Club Hurling Championship in 2002. The success continues at the Senior level. Hinphey won five Derry Hurling Championships with the club (2003 to 2006, 2007, 2007 and 2008). In late July, he returned to Australia for the final stages of the 2009 Derry Championship.
Hinphey plays his club football for St. Canice’s Dungiven and won the Derry ACFL Division 2 in 2007. He returned from Australia in late July in time for the latter stages of the 2009 Derry Championship.
