Liam Fennelly is one of the most popular and richest Hurler who was born on January 1, 1958 in Piltown, Ireland. Liam Fennelly was a Kilkenny County native, born in Piltown in 1958. He is the fifth and eldest child of Kevin Fennelly, the former Teresa Hoyne. The entire family moved to Ballyhale at the age of 3 and bought a farm. Fennelly attended the local school, where his hurling abilities were first noticed and refined by Joe Dunphy and Peadar O’Neill. Fennelly’s skills were also refined on the family farm, where he was trained with his six brothers, Ger, Kevin and Brendan.
Fennelly also added two more county medals to the collection, making it three consecutive years in 1979 and 1980. After a victory of 3-10 to 1-8 over Coolderry, Offaly, this victory was converted into a Leinster club championship. Again, Ballyhale Shamrocks reached All-Ireland Final where they were defeated by the Cork-based St. Finbarr’s club. In an exciting match, all seven Fennelly brothers took part. The Shamrocks won the contest on five occasions in the first thirty minutes. Ballyhale won the full-time whistle by -15 points to 1-11, and Fennelly took home his first All-Ireland medal with six of his brothers.
Fennelly made his debut on the Kilkenny senior team in 1981; however, Offaly had emerged as the new force in Leinster.
In 1982 Fennelly tasted his first major victory with the senior outfit when he captured a National Hurling League title. He later lined out in Croke Park in his very first Leinster final. Offaly, the reigning provincial and All-Ireland champions were the opponents on that occasion and an interesting game developed. After a close seventy minutes of hurling Kilkenny emerged victorious by just two points and Fennelly collected his first Leinster winners’ medal. He subsequently lined out in the All-Ireland championship decider against Cork. Christy Heffernan was the hero of the day as he scored two goals in a forty-second spell just before half-time. Fennelly’s brother, Ger, captured a third goal in the second half as Kilkenny completely trounced ‘the Rebels’ by 3-18 to 1-15. This victory gave Fennelly his first All-Ireland medal.
The Fennellys have had a long association to their local Ballyhale Shamrocks Club. Kevin Fennelly Snr. helped found the club. In 1972, Fennelly Sr. was instrumental in the founding of the club. The new club was at the top of local hurling and Fennelly played an important role in helping Ballyhale win their first senior county title. The Shamrocks team was able to represent Kilkenny at the provincial club championship. Fennelly’s team faced Dublin champions Crumlin in the final of that competition. Fennelly won his first Leinster club championship with a victory of 1-13 to 1, Ballyhale Shamrocks defeated Cork’s Blackrock club in the All-Ireland final. Blackrock won the title with a ten- goal thriller by 5-7 to 5- 5.

Fennelly was a Kilkenny minor hurling player who first made a name for himself on the inter-county scene during the mid-1970s. In 1976, he won the Leinster championship in this grade when Kilkenny beat Wexford by a respectable 2-14-1-8 win. Kilkenny took on Tipperary in the All-Ireland championship decider. From a Kilkenny perspective, the game was a disaster as Tipperary won by a huge margin of 2-20 to 1-7.
The rest of the 1980s saw Fennelly bring his county championship tally up to eight with further wins in 1985, 1988 and 1989. The third of these victories was subsequently converted into fourth Leinster club title following a trouncing of the Cuala club from Dublin. Ballyhale later qualified for the All-Ireland final where Limerick and Munster representatives Ballybrown were the opponents. Ballybrown stormed into a six-point lead in the middle of the first-half before Fennelly scored a goal in the twenty-fourth minute. At half- time Ballybrown still led by four points, however, a surge by Ballyhale saw the Kilkenny side claim a 1-16 to 0-16 victory. It was Fennelly’s third All- Ireland medal.
