Li Ya Biography

Li Ya is one of the most popular and richest Artistic Gymnast who was born on June 13, 1988 in Bengbu, China. Li Ya is a former Chinese gymnast. She was part of the Chinese team which won the 2006 World Championships team competition. She also competed in Anaheim’s World Championships. She was a balance beam and uneven bars specialist throughout her career.

She represented China at the 2006 World Championships, Aarhus, Denmark. There she was part of the Chinese team that won gold in the women’s team competition. Due to nerves from a preliminary fall that had hampered her performance, she was unable to compete in the team final.

In 2007, Li Ya competed in the Maribor World Cup where she placed 2nd on balance beam and 1st on the uneven bars.

Li Ya has two moves named after her in the Code of Points: the “Li Ya salto”, which is a straddled Jaeger ½ release (which she usually connected to a straddled Jaeger), and the “Li Ya dismount”, which is an Arabian double-front in a piked position. Li retired from the national team in 2008.

Li Ya was not given positive coverage in China after the competition and she was not selected to the 2006 Asian Games team in Doha, Qatar. She had another chance though, as she qualified for bars and beam at the World Cup Finals in Brazil in December. At this competition, she did her routines well, taking silver on bars, behind Beth Tweddle, the world champion, and winning gold on balance beam.

Li Ya was the 2004 National Champion on the uneven bars and the 2004 National All Around Silver Medalist. Despite a disappointing performance at the 2004 Olympics, she had great success in the 2004 World Cup Circuit. She fell twice on beam in the 2004 Summer Olympics at Athens. One time on her front flip, she then overrotated on her double-back dismount and dropped her hands. She fell on her front flip again in the event finals and was ranked 7th. At the Glasgow and Ghent World Cup Qualifiers, she won the title of uneven bars. She was also awarded a bronze medal in the 2004 Glasgow World Cup Qualifier. Li Ya was able to qualify for the World Cup Finals in Birmingham in December 2004. She was the most successful Chinese female gymnast in the World Cup Final. She was awarded a bronze medal for the uneven bars and a second place on the balance beam.

Li sustained a minor injury in 2005 but was able to return in time to win silver medals in the 2005 Chinese National Championships as well as the 2005 Britain vs China Dual Meet at the uneven bars. She competed in the National Games in October but didn’t win any medals. She was part of China’s winning team in the East Asia Games, Macau, a few weeks later. There, she won a medal on the uneven bars and a gold medal. She was not selected to compete in the 2005 World Championships at Melbourne.

She competed in the 2006 Tournament of Masters in Cottbus, a world cup event, and won the gold medal on the uneven bars. In this event, she pioneered a difficult release-release combination, a Jaeger with a half turn directly into a Jaeger. The Jaegar with 1/2 turn release was later named for her. Li also qualified for the beam final and finished in fourth place, due to a mistake on her first skill.
