McMahon joined Conference North club Gainsborough Trinity in July 2007. McMahon was loaned to Matlock Town, Northern Premier League Premier Division club Matlock Town, on 25 February 2012. McMahon returned to Trinity, but was not used in the club’s playoff matches. They lost to Nuneaton Town in the final. In May 2012, Trinity released him.

McMahon signed for Matlock permanently on 27 June 2012, and was their top scorer in 2012–13 with 24 goals. He returned to Gainsborough on a one-month loan on 22 November 2013, and scored five goals from five matches.

McMahon joined Conference North club North Ferriby United on 7 February 2014. He was an unused substitute in their play-off semi-final matches, but played as a substitute in the 5–2 win over Bridlington Town in the East Riding Senior Cup final on 13 May 2014. McMahon moved to Australia and signed for Australian Football West Premier League club Floreat Athena later in 2014.

McMahon signed by Conference National Club York City 18 August 2006, after he had left Notts County. York released McMahon at the end 2006-07. McMahon stated that York released him at the end of 2006-07. I was scoring quite many goals and doing very well. I lost one stone and completed all the gaffer’s requirements so it was disappointing not to be able to participate in the first team.

McMahon was born in Doncaster, South Yorkshire. He began his career at Sheffield Wednesday. He was signed as a trainee and made his first senior debut playing all ninety minutes against Second Division rivals Barnsley at Hillsborough on March 13, 2004 in front of 25,664 fans. It was a 2-1 win with Guylain Ndumbu–Nsungu scoring both goals at half-time. He made eight more starts that season, and two more as a substitute. McMahon was back for 17 more games next season and scored his first senior goals. This was against Blackpool, which resulted in a 2-1 win. McMahon was however released on Wednesday after the 2004-05 season.

After his release from Sheffield Wednesday, McMahon was signed to a one year contract by Notts County in July 2005. McMahon was released by Sheffield Wednesday in July 2005.

McMahon was called up to the England national C team for their match against Malta in February 2009. He started the match as captain, before being substituted in the 46th minute, as England won 4–0.
