Levan Varshalomidze is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on January 17, 1972 in Batumi, Georgia. Levan Varshalomidze, Georgia’s politician (Georgian pronunciation: levan varshalomiz’e ), was born 17 January 1972. He served as the Chairman of the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara between 2004 and 2012. After Aslan Abashidze’s resignation, he assumed office on the 20th of July 2004. He had previously run the region in disobedience to the central government of Georgia during the 2004 Adjara crisis.

Varshalomidze was elected to the political scene following the resignation of Aslan Abashidze (a long-standing Adjara leader), who resigned after a dispute with Saakashvili’s government. Since the 1990s, his family has been involved in the politics of the region. His father Guram Varshalomidze was an ally of Abashidze and chaired the Supreme Council of Adjara from the mid-1990s. He then headed the regional statistics office. From July 2004 to 2005, he would be the head of the Georgian Oil Corporation.

On 30 October 2012, following the defeat of Saakashvili-led United National Movement party in the nationwide and regional legislative elections in favor of the opposition Bidzina Ivanishvili – Georgian Dream coalition, the Supreme Council of Adjara elected Archil Khabadze, a candidate nominated by Georgia’s new Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili, as the new head of Adjara’s government. Varshalomidze became the leader of a regional cell of the now- opposition United National Movement party.

On 14 January 2012, Varshalomidze was awarded by President Saakashvili the Presidential Order of Excellence for his contributions to the efforts that led to release of Georgian sailors from captivity of Somali pirates.

Levan Varshalomidze, who was ousted by Abashidze, was named by Saakashvili to be the chairman of a special 20-member Presidential Interim Council that is charged with managing the transition. Varshalomidze was appointed by the Supreme Council of Adjara to be the head of the republic’s government on 20 July 2004.

Varshalomidze was a Batumi native. In 1994, he graduated from Kiev State University with a law degree. He also made friends with Mikheil Saakashvili, a fellow Georgian student. In 1999, he received a PhD from the same university and was promoted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia. Varshalomidze was appointed to head one of the bureaus in 2000 by Saakashvili, who was then the minister of justice for Georgia. After serving a short time with the Ministry of Finance of Georgia, Varshalomidze retired to the private sector. Varshalomidze was elected Director of the Georgian Railways on January 2004, following the November 2003 Rose Revolution in Georgia. This brought Saakashvili into power.

Varshalomidze was a close ally to President Saakashvili. He also belonged to the young reformist team that entered Georgian politics following the 2003 Rose Revolution. Critics accuse him of amassing personal fortune, manipulating the media and being a victim to nepotism.

In April 2010, Varshalomidze publicly accused Nika Gilauri, Prime Minister of Georgia, and the central government, of ignoring his requests for delegating “technical functions” to the local authorities in Adjara. Following a meeting with the members of the central government in Tbilisi, Varshalomidze said the differences were resolved.
