Letsie III, born David Mohato Bereng Seiso on 17 July 1963, is the King of Lesotho. When his father Moshoeshoe II was forced to exile in 1990, he succeeded him. In 1995, his father was briefly restored but he died in a car accident in early 1996. Letsie then became king again. Most of King Letsie’s duties as Lesotho’s monarch are ceremonial because he is a constitutional monarch. He declared HIV/AIDS in Lesotho a natural catastrophe in 2000. This prompted immediate international and national responses to the crisis.
King Letsie was married to Karabo Motsoeneng in 2000. They have two daughters and one boy.
His coronation was held at Setsoto Stadium on 31 October 1997. Charles, Prince of Wales, attended the ceremony.
