Van Gelder was born 1969 in Manhattan. She was the daughter of Richard Van Gelder curator at American Museum of Natural History. She spent a lot of her childhood in East Africa with him and in the U.S. National Parks. She worked in the Quebec-Labrador Foundation, teaching environmental education in communities outside of Montreal from 1985 to 1989. She taught high school in northern New Jersey, and then left to pursue a PhD at the Union Institute and University in Place Studies. For this she received the Sussman Award. Her research in Place Studies was published in a variety of journals, including the Journal of Implicit Religion and Nature in Story and Legend, Green Letters, and in the monograph Weaving a Way home: A Personal Journey of Place and Story, which was published by the University of Michigan Press (2008).

Kevin Sharpe, an archaeologist and theologian was her husband until his death in 2008. She lives in New Zealand’s Rees Valley, near Glenorchy.

She is the wife of Kevin Sharpe. Richard Van Gelder was her father. He is the curator of Mammalogy at The American Museum of Natural History. Lawrence Van Gelder was her uncle and was a senior editor at The New York Times from 2008 to 2008. Gordon Van Gelder is her brother and Hugo Award-winning science writer editor. Russell Van Gelder, her brother, is the chairman of ophthalmology for University of Washington.
