Santos was a South China Athletic Association player during his peak years (1983-1997). After tearing his left knee in the final match in 1992-1993 against British Forces, which put him out of work for eight months, and then again in a league match against Sing Tao (1993-1994) after an intense tackle by Ian Docker. This required three years of rehabilitation. He was twice named Footballer of the Year and completed his career with Sun Hei.
Santos was appointed coach of Sun Hei in 2008-09 Hong Kong League Cup. He led them to victory over TSW Pegasus FC, where they won 6-4 on penalties. This win marked the end of his coaching career. This win earned Santos the Best Coach of Year award. Santos was shocked by the award, as he only coached for a very short period.
