After discovering that Rutledge was registered to vote in Washington, D.C., Larry Crane, County Clerk of Pulaski county, cancelled Rutledge’s voter registry. Rutledge subsequently reregistered in Pulaski.
In 2016, Rutledge stated that she would appeal a ruling supporting LGBT anti- discrimination laws enacted in Fayetteville, Arkansas, that is in opposition to a state law prohibiting these ordinances.
In June 2017, Rutledge again rejected a proposed state constitutional amendment to legalize casino gambling in the state. She rejected the proposal by Barry Emigh of Hot Springs, writing that the proposed popular name and ballot title are “misleading and wholly deficient.”

Born in Batesville, Arkansas, Leslie Carol Rutledge graduated from Southside High School, University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and William H. Bowen School of Law at University of Arkansas at Little Rock. As an associate justice of Arkansas Supreme Court, she began her legal career in the position of clerk to Judge Josephine Hart of Arkansas Court of Appeals. In 2008, she was named Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee’s deputy counsel. She later served as Huckabee’s Legal Counsel. In addition to her duties as a deputy prosecuting lawyer in Lonoke County, she also served as an attorney for the State of Arkansas’s Division of Children and Family Services. Before becoming counsel for the Republican National Committee, she served as the National Republican Congressional Campaign Committee’s deputy counsel. Rutledge was the founder and attorney of The Rutledge Firm, PLLC, before she was elected as attorney general.
Rutledge met Boyce Johnson, a farmer at an American Farm Bureau Federation convention in 2013. Johnson received a B.S. degree from the University of Arkansas in 1982. Johnson holds a B.S. in agriculture from the University of Arkansas. Formerly, he was President of the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food, and Life Sciences Alumni Society Board of Directors. They were married in December 2015. Rutledge was announced as expecting her first child in April 2018. Rutledge was blessed with a girl in July 2018. Arkansas’ first constitutional officer to have a child while still in office was Rutledge.
Rutledge sought the Republican nomination for Attorney General of Arkansas in the 2014 election. She faced fellow attorneys Patricia Nation and David Sterling. Rutledge finished with a plurality in the primary but finished with less than 50 percent of the vote. She hence faced second-place finisher David Sterling in a runoff election. Nation endorsed Rutledge, and she defeated Sterling.
