Leroy Burrell is one of the most popular and richest Sprinter who was born on February 21, 1967 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. Leroy Russel Burrell (born February 21st 1967) is an American former track and field athlete who set two times the world record in the 100-meter sprint.

Since his departure from 1998 Burrell was appointed to replace his former college coach, Tom Tellez, as coach of the track team. Burrell has guided UH towards 14 men’s Conference USA titles (nine indoor five outside) in addition to nine women’s championships (four indoor five outdoors). Burrell was inducted into Texas Track and Field Coaches Hall of Fame in 2014.

Burrell married Michelle Finn, also a sprinter, in 1994, and they have three sons: Cameron, a sprinter for the Houston Cougars, Joshua, and Jaden. On June 7, 2017, Cameron joined his father in the sub-10 second club. Burrell’s younger sister Dawn also competed in track and field at the highest level and she was a world indoor champion in the long jump.

He set the first record for the world in June 1991, running 9.90 seconds. The record was broken in the month of September, when Burrell was beaten by Carl Lewis who ran 9.86 seconds at the 1991 World Track and Field Championships at which Burrell placed second in his personal best time that was 9.88 seconds. On July 24, 1994, Burrell recorded the record in the third time, when he completed the race in 9.85 seconds (a record which stood up until the 1996 Olympics at which Donovan Bailey ran 9.84 sec).

On the 19th of May in 1990 Burrell completed a race with a helper from the wind 200-meter race in College Station, Texas, in 19.61 seconds. The speed of the wind was +4.0 meters per second. This was the fastest speed in the 200 m race in over six years, until at the 1996 Olympic finale in Atlanta the year that Michael Johnson ran 19.32 seconds.

Burrell was constantly plagued by injuries and poor luck during his time, especially during major competitions. Burrell won gold in the 100 meters in front of Carl Lewis at the 1990 Goodwill Games in Seattle. He took silver medal in the 100m ahead of Lewis during the 1991 World Championships. In the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Burrell false-started in the 100-meter final. When the race resumed the race, his response to the finish line was slow and he was fifth. However, he did claim a relay gold one of U.S. 4 100 m team.
