He was elected president in 2012 following the South Ossetian president’s election.

As a step towards integrating into in a bid to join Russian Federation, Tibilov proposed in December 2015 that the name be changed in the form of “South Ossetia-Alania” — as a resemblance to “North Ossetia-Alania”, a Russian federal subject. Tibilov added that he would like to hold a referendum to join with the Russian Federation prior to April 2017 that could result in the creation of a united “Ossetia-Alania”. In April of 2016, Tibilov said he intended to hold the referendum by the month of August. On the 30th of May, Tibilov postponed the referendum until after the presidential election that was scheduled on April 17, 2017. The name-change referendum was a success, with more than 80 percent of the people who participated voted in favor of the name-change and the presidential election ended up being won by Anatoliy Bibilov against incumbent Tibilov who was given the backing of Moscow and, like Bibilov was prepared to comply with Moscow’s demand that the referendum on integration to not be scheduled for any time in the near future.

In the run-up to the 2012 elections, Tibilov dissociated himself from former president Kokoity. Tibilov is said as being faithful to Russia and has pledged to consult with Russia prior to naming a new government should he be successful during the election.
