Leonardo Vitor Santiago (born on March 9, 1983) is commonly referred to as Leonardo is a Brazilian former professional footballer who was an attacker or winger. Leonardo is an ex-U-20 Brazilian international.

It was his first time at NAC Breda in January 2006 with an 1.5-year contract. He assisted NAC Breda to stay in the Eredivisie by scoring eight goals in 14 matches during the regular season. This was his highest goal-scoring record for the club.

2011 he went from NAC Breda to FC Red Bull Salzburg on loan.

In February 2013 Leonardo signed a contract with Hungarian top club Ferencváros.

Leonardo was born playing at Nova Safra football school in Rio de Janeiro and was born in the Jacarezinho neighborhood and is the place in which Romario was born. He spent his childhood in the Jacarezinho neighbourhood. In 1994 at the age 11 Leonard’s soccer talent became apparent to Jos de Putter, who had directed the film “Solo, de wet van de favela” about the young footballer and his friend, Anselmo, from the slums of Rio de Janeiro. The documentary examines how football plays an important part in bringing youngsters from the bleak living conditions that a lot of youngsters living in favelas face every day.

After the media attention that the film drew to Leonardo was able to move to Rotterdam to join Feyenoord’s youth academy in Varkenoord. Leonardo began his career with Feyenoord on the 19th August of 2000, in a 2-0 win against AZ Alkmaar, at the age of 17. Leonardo’s debut was controversial both for himself as well as Feyenoord because FIFA rules regarding the player’s status under article 19 stipulate that “international transfers of players are only permitted if the player is over the age of 18” in relation to players who are not European Union (EU) players. It was later discovered that Leonardo was incorrectly informed and misrepresented, which resulted in a fake Portuguese passport being issued to Leonardo which made Feyenoord think they could play Leonardo at the age of 17.

In December 2006 Leonardo agreed with Ajax on a new 2.5-year contract. On 21 January 2007, he played his first Ajax Eredivisie game against FC Utrecht Six weeks later in the game against SC Heerenveen he suffered a heavy injury tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, which sidelined him for at least six months.
