On May 23, 2006, the announcement was made that Benko has signed with German Bundesliga side 1. FC Nurnberg on a three-year contract that includes an option of a one-year extension. The player made the Bundesliga debut on August 12, 2006, appearing as an extra in the final 5 minutes in the initial league game of the 2006-07 campaign with a 3-0 victory away in the match against VfB Stuttgart. He ended his first Bundesliga season with just seven games, missing the whole second half in the campaign due to injuries.
On 4 August 2008, Benko moved to Belgian side Standard Liège for an undisclosed fee, signing a one-year contract with an optional extension. He made his debut for the club on 16 August 2008 in their 3–1 away win at FCV Dender in the first round of the 2008–09 Jupiler League, coming on as a late substitute. In his only season with the club he made only 14 league appearances due to his injury problems. He managed to win the Belgian First Division title with the club.
On 30 June 2009, K.V. Kortrijk signed the Croatian forward from Standard Liège until June 2010.
Benko has been selected in the Croatian national team under 21 and later on, he was able to debut with Croatia’s A-team in their two matches in the Carlsberg Cup in Hong Kong.

Benko began his professional deal with the local youth team, NK Varteks, in July 2003. He continued to be a part of the team for the subsequent three seasons with coaches Miroslav Blazevic (2003-05) and Zlatko Dalic (2005-06). In his second year at Varteks Benko was able to establish him as one of Varteks’ most important players, featuring in 26 games in the Croatian First League.
The summer of 2005 Varteks also had a strong performance. Varteks during Varteks’ participation in the UEFA Intertoto Cup, scoring the entire four goals of their 4-1 win against Dinamo Tirana as well as two goals, including the goal that won them the match in a victory of 4-3 against Inter Turku. He ended the 2005-06 season with the club’s highest scoring player with 14 goals scored in 27 league games and played a major role in Varteks’ 2005/06 Croatian Cup campaign in which they made it to the final but losing to Rijeka in the away goals rule. His impressive performance at Varteks brought his an award in 2005, the Hope of the Year award for the best player in Croatia’s youth.
He scored his first goal for Nürnberg on 29 November 2007 in their UEFA Cup group match against eventual winners of the competition, Zenit Saint Petersburg, securing his team a 2–2 away draw. He made a total of four appearances for Nürnberg in the 2007–08 season of the UEFA Cup.

Benko was once again included in the roster for the friendly match against South Korea on 10 September 2013. He provided a crucial assist for Domagoj Vida who scored the first goal in 65th minute of the match.
