Lee Jeong-hyang (Korean: ijeonghyang ; born 13 April 1964) is a South Korean film director and screenwriter. She is most famous for The Way Home (2002) the film that she wrote, directed and produced. It was awarded the awards for her Best Film and Best Original Screenplay at the Grand Bell Awards.

The next 2 years Lee spent a few months to unwind after the huge commercial success that was The Way Home. In 2004 Lee “started to add the finishing touches to the synopsis of A Reason to Live” (2011). The film is centered on the concept of forgiveness, specifically in relation to those who have been killed in injuries and families. After having written the synopsis several years prior to her debut, numerous adjustments were required in order to accommodate her diverse perspectives and views about life. The film premiered at 16th Busan International Film Festival nine years since having released her final film.

Lee’s second feature film as a writer and director, The Way Home (2002) was, without doubt, her most critically acclaimed and successful to the present. The film is a story of a young man who was born in the city and is sent to live with an elderly and mute grandmother in her village. The adolescent is struggling to reconcile their different their lifestyles and attitudes however, he eventually learns to appreciate and admire the more simple, traditional life. Through the film’s “subtle characterization, sensibility, and aesthetics” The film captivated masses, and became Korea’s second-highest- grossing movie in the entire year. It was also awarded Best Film and Best Original Screenplay for Lee at the Grand Bell Awards, which is South Korea’s equivalent to the Oscars.

Lee was born in South Korea, Lee attended Sogang University, majoring in French Literature and Language. Lee then enrolled in The Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA) in 1988, and was part of the Fourth graduating class.

After graduating of KAFA, Lee worked as an assistant director for Declaration of Genius (1995) which was a film directed by Lee Jang-ho, a filmmaker who became famous in the late 1970s. It was around this time during 1995 when state-sponsored restriction on speech was at its highest and the government was censoring its media, that Lee began work on the script for her feature writer-director first film, Art Museum by the Zoo (1998). Even though it only came out towards the close of the year on the 19th of December 1998, the film was the fifth highest-grossing movie that year. The film, a semi- autobiographical romantic comedy about two strangers who end up living together and cowriting a screenplay about their relationship, won the leads, Shim Eun-ha a Best Actress award at the Grand Bell Awards and Lee Sung-jae several Best New Actor Awards.
