Southend United announced on 25 January 2008 that Barnard signed a long-term contract which would have kept Barnard in the Roots Hall until 2010. Barnard began his career for Southend on the night of Barnsley during the FA Cup coming on as an extra at the 64th moment in place of Gary Hooper. On the 29th of January, Barnard made his first league appearance at Leeds United and scored the sole goal of the match in the 41st minutes, scoring on the loose ball following Steven Hammell’s free kick hit the post. Barnard has scored 9 goals in January through the close of the season including a late goal at Carlisle United, who had the most impressive domestic record of the league. Barnard had a difficult season in 2008-09 due to injuries but he finished the season as highest scoring player at the club. His final goal for Southend was on the 28th of December at Leyton Orient, where Southend winning 2-1. Barnard made his final appearance in the game for Southend against Huddersfield Town in the 2-1 defeat. In his two seasons at Southend, Barnard made 85 appearances for Southend and scored 37 goals.
Barnard signed for Southampton on 22 January 2010 for an undisclosed fee, with Matt Paterson joining Southend. He had scored 17 goals in all competitions for Southend in the 2009–10 season. He made his debut the following day against Ipswich Town in the FA Cup in a 2–1 win. He made his league debut for the club on 26 January, against Brentford in a 1–1 draw. On 20 February, Barnard scored his debut league goals for Southampton, against title challengers Norwich City, scoring both goals in the 2–0 win which saw the end of Norwich’s 11-match winning run. A week later he showed the same form as he netted a brace against Walsall in a 5–1 victory, and then scoring again three days later in the 5–0 win over Huddersfield Town. In the 2010–11 season he scored twice against Yeovil in a 3–0 victory and four days later scored the first goal in a 3–1 away win at Bournemouth. He finished the season with 16 goals, but missed the last few weeks due to injury.
The matter came to trial at Salisbury Crown Court in April 2012 where Lee Barnard was cleared of all charges after the jury took less than an hour to find him not guilty of any crime.
The 30th August 2007 Barnard was loaned at League One team Crewe Alexandra for five months following an injury accident in training. Barnard scored his debut at the railwaymen’s game 2-0 victory at home against Huddersfield Town on 8 September 2007. He injured his ankle ligaments late in October, and was back at Spurs over the course of two months of treatment.

Lee James Barnard (born 18 July 1984) is an English footballer who is a striker with Maldon & Tiptree.
With his awe-inspiring score on reserve levels, he was slated to make his first appearance in the squad during the 2005-06 season. He was scheduled to debut in the game with Charlton Athletic on 5 February 2006. Tottenham led 3-0 when the Charlton strike in the final minute of the game meant Martin Jol did not want to sign another striker and Barnard was forced to wait. After the game, he was struck with an injury to his ankle that was a major issue that kept him out for five weeks before returning for the reserve game in the match against Leicester City on 18 March.
On 3 October 2010, Barnard was arrested in connection with a brawl in the White House nightclub in Southampton; he was immediately given police bail to go to Southampton General Hospital to have treatment for an injury to his hand. Amongst the witnesses to the incident was cage fighter, Tom Watson, who was celebrating his recent victory over Celebrity Big Brother winner Alex Reid.
