Brigadier General Leanne van den Hoek (born 21 August 1958 in Rotterdam) is an officer in the Royal Netherlands Army. Her first wife was the only woman ever to have the rank of flag officer in the Dutch military. She is married, however she has decided to not have children.

Van den Hoek is an enthusiast athlete. Before 2000, she was a skydiver who loved to jump; she was a member of the Dutch national team, and also participated in the world precision skydiving championships. She completed 1540 jumps prior to an accident with a karting machine in 2000 led to an injury to her whiplash. She was forced to quit parachuting. She is now a golfer.

Van den Hoek set a first on 17 July 2001 when she became the first female battalion commander in the Royal Netherlands Army. She commanded the 200th Supply and Transport Battalion at Nunspeet and ‘t Harde. Promoted to colonel, she later became Director of the Defense Institute for Medical Screening and Selection.

On 1 November 2005 the Dutch State Secretary of Defence Cees van der Knaap promoted Van den Hoek to the rank of brigadier general. This made General Van den Hoek the first female flag officer of the Dutch military. She has been commanding officer of the Army Personnel Department since.

She continued her education in the military during 1993 when she enrolled at the Hogere Militaire Vorming. When she completed her training during 1994, the trainee was appointed to her first command post within the 41st Mechanized Brigade in Seedorf. The position lasted till 1996 when she joined at the German Fuhrungsakademie. Following the general staff training and assignment, she was appointed as a member of The Army Staff in The Hague.

Van den Hoek originally wanted to become a police officer in her youth, which was her goal. However, she was not accepted to train due to her poor vision. Then, she was accepted into the military academy, which she was able to pass the physical tests for military selection (just in 1979; the Dutch military used the same physical standards for males and females) even though she was a bit smaller (1.65 meters). Van den Hoek enrolled in the Koninklijke Militaire Academie at Breda as an officer cadet in 1979.

After graduating in 1983 she worked in several operational posts in the field of Military Logistics; these positions included her being stationed in the Netherlands as well as in Germany. Concerning her decision to pursue military logistics instead of the primary training for combat, Van den Hoek stated that in 1983, combat positions meant “sitting around all day waiting for the Russians to invade” which she believed was not likely to ever happen. The reason she chose logistics was that “an army must always eat – be it in peacetime or at war”.

Upon being promoted battalion commander in 2001, Van den Hoek was interviewed on the radio. When asked whether she, as a woman in the military, was hampered by the glass ceiling, she got slightly irritated and responded “What’s a glass ceiling?”
