Loveless, is an American former competitive athlete, Olympic champion, and former college swimming coach. She competed for her country in the United States at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, where she was awarded an Olympic gold medal in the backstroke portion of the women’s 4×100 meter medley relay. She also received bronze at the 100-meter backstroke. She was director of coaching for Stanford University’s Stanford University women’s swimming and diving team from 2005 until 2012.
Maurer is currently an assistant coach volunteer with his team Stanford Men’s Water Polo Team from spring 2013.
She was appointed the head coaching the Stanford women’s diving and swimming team. She helped the team win two consecutive Pac-10 championships in 2011 and 2010 and then resigned after an unsuccessful 2012 campaign. She was admitted to the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006.

Maurer is a native of Yonkers, New York. In the beginning of her career, she was trained by John Collins of the Badger Swim Club in Larchmont, New York, as well as a team and coach that has also produced Olympic winners Rick Carey and Cristina Teuscher. She was a student at an academic program at the University of Florida in 1989 and 1990, and participated in the Florida Gators swimming and diving team under the direction of coach Randy Reese. She was transferred from Stanford University prior to the 1992 Olympics. Lea set the backstroke 100m American record by clocking 100.82 during the Barcelona Olympic Games leading off the world record-setting the 1992 medley relay. Lea later took home the gold medal at the World championships in Perth, Australia in 1998 beating her record. American Record to 100.77. Apart from winning her Olympic and world championships medals, Lea was a member of three Stanford’s NCAA swimming teams during 1993, 1992 and 1994. She also took home three NCAA individual championships in the 100-meter backstroke, and two in the 200-meter reversestroke. She continued to participate on the USA National Team until 2000.
After retiring from competitive swimming Loveless Maurer, who is married to fellow Stanford swimmer Erik Maurer, became an assistant coach for swimming for Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Between 1995 and 2005, she was the coach of both girls and boys swimmers in Lake Forest High School located in Lake Forest, Illinois, in which teams for girls took home an overall state championship both in 2002 as well as 2003 while the team for boys took home the state championship in 2003.
