In 2015, she was co-captain (with Amy Conroy) of the U25 team in the 2015 Wheelchair U25 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Beijing and won gold. Then she was part of the senior team which defeated France to win bronze at the 2014 European Championship. In May of 2016 she was chosen to that team in 2016’s Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro. The British team put up their best in its history at the Paralympics that made it to the semi-finals. However, they fell in the semi-finals against USA. United States, and then the bronze medal match was lost to the Netherlands.

She attended Altrincham Grammar School for Girls and proceeded to graduate with a first class honours Bachelor of Science degree in social psychology from Loughborough University. “There were loads of different reasons for coming to Loughborough University,” she explained. “The course was one of them; it’s one of the only universities in the country that does social psychology and that was important for me. The sport as well, obviously. I applied for the 2012 scholarship and got it and the facilities are really good. But the atmosphere was also a big factor. It’s one of the best student experience universities in the country.”

In 2009, Williams began her career for Team Great Britain at the 2009 BT Paralympic World Cup in Manchester In 2010, she made up the squad that finished sixth in the World Championships in Birmingham – Britain’s greatest performance to date. Williams was later included in the group that took home bronze in the U22 European Championships in Italy in the following year. She was awarded silver at the European Championships in Nazareth in 2011 and Frankfurt in 2013. She also took bronze during the U25 World Championship in St. Catharines, Canada in the year 2011. The Canadian made her Paralympic debut in the presence of a crowd from home during the 2012 Summer Paralympics held in London.

Laurie Williams (born 4 February 1992) is a 2.5 point wheelchair basketball athlete who played in the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London and also at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, representing Great Britain.

When she was 13years old, Williams began to participate in wheelchair athletics as well as wheelchair racing. When she was at the Greater Manchester Youth Games in 2005, she was invited to test out for wheelchair basketball. She was awed by the challenge as well as the social aspect of playing in an ensemble, and began playing competitively in the year 2008. The team were known to call her “whippet” on account of her athleticism on the basketball court. She was a player in the Nottingham Coyotes in the National League and is classified as a 2.5 point player.

Whilst studying at University of Alabama, Williams was part of the university wheelchair basketball team, and participated in their successfully winning their fourth National Championship in seven years in 2015, with a 58–52 win over the University of Illinois.
