In the lead-up to Rio’s 2016 Summer Paralympics held in Rio, Sugar travelled to Doha to compete in the second World Championships. Sugar was chosen as a member of the Great Britain management to co-captain the team with middle distance runners Paul Blake and middle-distance Paul Blake. Sugar only participated in the 100m race which was a time of 14.86 which was well outside of what she had previously set, wasn’t enough to see her out of the competition. The following year saw a back to winning by winning two gold medals in the IPC Athletics European Championships in Grosseto. Sugar took bronze in the 200m, and an overall gold in the 200m. only a tenth of a second in front of that of the winning athlete Irmgard Bensusan, a native of Germany. Sugar’s debut international competition was in July 2013, when she was picked to be an athlete in the Great Britain team to compete in the 2013 IPC Athletics World Championships in Lyon. In the 100m for women (T44) she made it through the heats and finished 5th in the championships. In the 200m, she placed fourth, just a few inches away from the podium. In the next year, she took home her first international medal by winning 2 bronze awards during the 2014 IPC Athletics European Championships in Swansea in the 200m and 100m sprints. Between 2014 and 2015, Sugar also competed in Long jump competitions. Her best result was during the European Championships in Swansea where she finished fourth, with a jump of 4.27 meters.

Laura Sugar (born 7 February 1991) is an British Paralympic athlete who competes in sprint events within the classification T44. Before pursuing athletics, Sugar played for Wales in field hockey, captaining the team for under 20s.
In her hockey practice, the team’s physio spoke up about Sugar’s ankle injury, and suggested that she should consider trying the Paralympic sport, as she’d have the chance to earn an official classification. When she was watching the 2012 Summer Paralympics she noticed that the British discus thrower Dan Greaves appeared to have “the same leg”, and Sugar was inspired to follow the suggestions of her physiotherapist. She was at an Paralympic sports celebration in Surrey and after thinking about cycling and athletics , she chose to pursue the former. In February 2013, she took part in her first athletics test and was told that she was scheduled to fly out to Dubai within four weeks to be categorized before participating in the Fazaa International in the IPC Grand Prix event. The Grand Prix she ran in the 200m and 100m sprints, claiming two gold and silver medals. As an T44 class athlete Sugar was forced to make a decision whether she wanted to pursue her career in hockey or change into the track and field. She chose to pursue athletics and took the next 10 months spending all her time out of teaching to her new regimen of training.
