Her film from 2010 The Oath, about two Yemeni men who are caught up in the U.S. War on Terror, won the Excellence in Cinematography Award for U.S. documentary at the Sundance Film Festival. Two films form part of three films. The third installment Citizenfour in 2014 explains ways in which this War on Terror increasingly focuses on Americans through surveillance, secret actions, and attacks on whistleblowers.
In 2012 Poitras took an active part in the three-month exposition of Whitney Biennial exhibition of contemporary American art.
The Program implied that a facility being built at Bluffdale, Utah is part of domestic surveillance, intended for storage of massive amounts of data collected from a broad range of communications that could be mined readily for intelligence without warrants. As a child, Laura planned to become an chef. She spent many years working as chef at L’Espalier which is an upscale French restaurant that was located near the Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood.
