LaToya Cantrell (born on April 3 1972) is an American politician currently serving as the city’s Mayor New Orleans, Louisiana, which she holds since May 7, 2018. Cantrell is an Democrat is the first woman of color to be elected mayor. Prior to becoming the mayor, Cantrell represented District B on the New Orleans City Council from 2012 to 2018.
in 2012 Cantrell made a formal announcement of her intentions to contest the New Orleans City Council seat vacant after District B’s former rep Stacy Head won an election to an at-large post. Following the November election the candidates Dana Kaplan and Cantrell advanced to a December runoff which Cantrell was victorious by a margin of 54 percent votes. Cantrell was elected to the final year of Head’s mandate, and was undefeated for an entire four- year term in 2014.
As a council member, Cantrell focused on health, housing, and criminal-justice issues. She introduced a bill banning smoking at restaurants and bars within New Orleans, citing the health effects of secondhand smoke on service industry workers. The council unanimously passed the bill in 2015.
In 2016, Cantrell was given a lifetime achievement award by the presidents of Tulane, Loyola and Xavier universities and the University of New Orleans for her service to the community.
Cantrell was full-time employed to implement the plan for recovery at Broadmoor from 2006 until 2012. The residents along with her formed Broadmoor School Board. Broadmoor School Board, overseeing the renovation and reopening of the Andrew H. Wilson school. She was a director of Broadmoor Development Corporation. Broadmoor Development Corporation, a community-based development corporation that offered case management as well as other social services to residents who had returned. She was involved in the residents’ effort to open the Broadmoor’s Rosa F. Keller Library which was awarded an award of $2 million by the Carnegie Endowment. She forged a partnership between and the Broadmoor Improvement Association and Church of the Annunciation and Church of the Annunciation, which gave the neighborhood association office space as well as host volunteers. Also, she formed a partnership with and the Broadmoor Improvement Association and her home church, Blessed Trinity Catholic Church in order to launch Broadmoor Art and Wellness Center. Cantrell was born LaToya Wilder , whose birthplace was in Los Angeles. In the beginning of 2006 it was the Bring New Orleans Back Commission formed by a blue-ribbon group, headed by the then-mayor Ray Nagin, released a recovery plan calling for Broadmoor as well as 5 other New Orleans neighborhoods to be converted into green space. As president of the group, Cantrell worked with residents and religious leaders in the area to mobilize opposition to the panel’s recommendations. She also assisted in enlisting the returning Broadmoor residents for the course of six months to develop a plan to rebuild the area.
Also in 2015, Cantrell began work to open a low-barrier homeless shelter, a move that was objected to by residents because of its proposed placement in Central City, New Orleans. Instead, the shelter was moved to the downtown site of the former VA Hospital. In 2017, Cantrell introduced legislation with at- large council member Jason Williams to register and inspect rental units in the city.
