Despite his numerous achievements, Kiyohara could not escape severe criticism throughout the last 10 years of his professional career, due to numerous injury-related issues that caused him take a break for substantial portions of every season. From 1999 to 2008, he was in more than 100 games just two times (2001 as well as 2003) in addition to receiving the equivalent of multimillion-dollar wages every year.
