Kathryn Suzanne “Katy” Steding (born on December 11th in 1967) is a former professional and collegiate basketball player, as well as the former head coach of basketball for Boston University.
Steding was chosen as a representative of the USA in the 1995 USA Women’s Pan American Games, however there were only four teams that had signed up to participate, which meant the event was canceled.
In 2001, Steding was named head women’s basketball coach at Warner Pacific College. Under her leadership, Warner Pacific went to the NAIA basketball tournament for the first time in school history in 2004. In 2006, Steding’s team won its first Cascade Conference championship and returned to the NAIA tournament. Steding was selected as Cascade Conference Coach of the Year. Also in 2006, she took a position as Director of Marketing and College Relations for Warner Pacific.
Steding was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 2004, and is also a member of the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame.
Following Stanford, Steding played basketball in Japan and Spain (Banco Exterior 1993-1994) in the beginning of the 1990s. She then earned an appearance on the U.S. national team, where she was awarded an Olympic gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics.

Steding is a native of Portland, Oregon, and was recruited for Stanford University from Lake Oswego High School near Portland. In Stanford, Steding, a power forward, led Stanford into its NCAA’s first Division I Women’s Basketball Championship in the year 1990. Steding had ten steals in an opponent contest in the match against Northwestern the following year. The ten steals set her school’s record number of steals during a single game. As an freshman, she was averaging 8.7 per game in rebounds and is still held (as in 2014) as an all-time school record.
Steding was selected to the team that represented America USA in the World University Games held during July of 1991 at Sheffield, England. The USA team had been crowned the gold medal in 1983, they came out with silver in 1985 and finished in the fifth spot in 1987 and didn’t field the team for 1989. The team was led by Tara VanDerveer of Stanford. After taking the opening game with ease and easily, the USA had to face China in the final. The USA shot just 36 percent from the field but they slowed the Chinese team down to China by 35% and beat them 79-76 to get into the gold-medal game. They were up against 7-0 Spain and won an 88-62 victory to win their gold. Steding scored an average of 10.3 scores per match.
With the formation of the American Basketball League in 1996, Steding returned to Oregon and became the founding player for the Portland Power. When the league folded in 1998, Steding joined the WNBA and played the 2000 season with the Sacramento Monarchs and the 2001 season with the Seattle Storm before retiring from professional basketball. She was drafted by the Monarchs with the 14th overall pick of the 2000 draft.
