Hoshino has identified Takeshi Obata and Osamu Akimoto as the two people who inspired her work. Her most famous work D.Gray-man has been heavily inspired by her earlier works. Characters are usually adapted from unpublished manga Hoshino had worked on in the beginning of her career. D.Gray-man along with its predecessor Zone have many common themes like the creation of demons referred to as akuma as well as the Exorcists’ duty to defeat these demons, and also the general plot of both books. The antagonist in Zone is known in the title of the Millennium Earl, retains his appearance and identity in D.Gray-man however the appearance for the protagonist’s female counterpart were altered to give a more masculine look of D.Gray-man its masculine protagonist Allen Walker. In the film, characters Lavi as well as Yu Kanda were carried over from two titles that were never published. In creating the demons by the name of “Akuma” from D.Gray-man, Hoshino was influenced to work on the movie of the same name in 1973 The Exorcist, even though she was averse to the film. With the release of the 13th book, Hoshino disclosed the tools she relies on when working using A PlayStation Portable, an iPod and a glove that her mother gifted to her.

When Hoshino was 17years old, she tried to secure animation jobs in spite of her parents’ wishes but she was unsuccessful. The following year, she tried to do it again, which was successful and she got accepted. Hoshino relocated to Tokyo to work as animator. Even though she became an artist Hoshino had issues in her work. Due to financial problems, Hoshino was thinking about returning to her parents, however her sister convinced her to go to Kyoto. At the time she was influenced by her sister to find a job, however she was unable to get most of the time. In a time that was not clear, Hoshino was motivated by her mother to write manga. Hoshino was still struggling with her new position because of the long working hours and the difficulties with storyboards and having travel on to the train. However, Hoshino succeeded in her job. She envisioned bringing her mother back to the city and managed to do so in the year the year 2006. After graduation from high school Hoshino was unsure of what she wanted to do with her life after being given the chance to work for gaming companies. In the end, she chose to write manga despite her concerns about the difficulties involved.

The D.Gray-man manga series has been adapted into various forms, including an anime series and three light novel adaptations. Three volumes placed in the top fifty of Japan’s bestselling manga of 2008 and the series is one of Weekly Shōnen Jump’ s bestselling manga series. It has gained attention in North America; both the manga and anime adaptions are licensed for English language releases. The manga series has been well received in France; it was awarded the prize for Best Manga Series 2006 at the Anime and Manga 2007 French Grand Prix organized by Animeland. It also won Webotaku’s prize for Manga of the Year 2006.

In Japan, D.Gray-man has been put on hiatus many times; once due to Hoshino falling seriously ill with Norovirus and another because of an injury to her neck. However the series continued shortly after in both cases. In November 2008, Weekly Shōnen Jump announced that Hoshino was again putting the series on hold due to an injured wrist. Publication resumed in March 2009. The series once again went on hiatus on May 11. The series resumed in the seasonal magazine Akamaru Jump on August 17, 2009. Following the release in Akamaru Jump, D.Gray-Man resumed its serialization on November 4, 2009 in the monthly- release Japanese manga magazine, Jump Square. Additionally, Hoshino was one of the multiple manga authors that celebrated the 10th anniversary of the manga series Naruto by drawing her own rendition of the main character, Naruto Uzumaki.

Hoshino’s debut publication Zone which was a one-shot title, was published in Akamaru Jump in December 2002 and was followed by her debut series, Continue (konteiniyu , Kontinyu) , which debuted by Weekly Shonen Jump in July 2003. Due to the low popularity of the series it was suggested that the Shueisha staff suggested Hoshino to develop the series based upon Zone. The one-shot Zone was followed with the D.Gray-man (deigureiman Di Gureiman) series, which started publishing in Weekly Shonen Jump in May 2004 and has a wide range of themes that are based on Zone. The entire series runs more than 200 chapters long and is available in Japan and is available in more than ten countries, comprising those in the United States, France, and Germany. A anime adaptation that was directed by Nabeshima Osamu and produced by Dentsu it broadcast from October 2006 until September 2008. Funimation licenses an English version of the show, the first 13 episodes of which were released on DVD in March 2009. In the spirit of Hoshino’s writings Kaya Kizaki has composed three novels, which are commonly known as D.Gray-man Reverse. Konami has produced two video games as well as trading card games. Fans of the fanbook D.Gray-man official fanbook called Gray Ark and the art book TV Animation D.Gray-man Official Visual Collection Clown Art were published between June and September of 2008, respectively. Then came an illustrated book called D.Gray-man Illustrations Noche, which was released in February 2010, and a second character book called “D.Gray-man Character Workbook CharaGray!” in July of 2011.
