The eldest among four kids, Katsi Cook was born on January 4, 1952 and was the daughter of Kawennaien Evelyn Mountour Cook and William John Cook on the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation also known as it’s the Mohawk Nation from Akwesasne. Her father, who was a graduate from Dartmouth College, was a pilot who served in World War II and the Korean War. He was killed in a plane crash when Cook was only nine months old. Her mother was born in Quebec and was educated under Catholic sisters, however, they she died at the age of Cook was eleven years old. In the remaining years period of her life, Katsi Cook lived with her maternal grandmother, Kanatires Elizabeth Herne Cook, an midwife who had given birth to Cook and numerous other children in Akwesasne.
Cook was also a part of the inaugural session in 1978 of Women of all Red Nations (WARN) in 1978. She later , she worked as a medical assistant in the Red Schoolhouse Clinic, a WARN project located in St Paul, Minnesota. She also founded The Women’s Dance Health Project as an initiative that was based on community. Cook returned to Akwesasne in the year 1980 after meeting an group of women who wanted who wanted to carry on the project.
As she pursued her undergraduate degree in Biology and Society in the School of Human Ecology at Cornell University in 1984, Cook, along with Lin Nelson, Janet Rith-Najarian, Doug Brown, spoke with Brian Bush, a chemist at the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) about establishing a breast milk study at Akwesasne. In 1985, the Women’s Dance Health Program became the Mother’s Milk Monitoring Project which continues to provide services and advocacy to this day. In subsequent environmental research on the reservation, Cook would be a bridge between the Akwesasne community, scientists, and government workers.
Between 1994 and 1998, Cook was a lecturer in the Department of Environmental Health and Toxicology at the State University New York (SUNY) at Albany School of Public Health as well as a Visiting Fellow at Cornell University’s American Indian Program. In 2001, she was the Dr. T.J. Murray Visiting Scholar in Medical Humanities at Dalhousie University and later gave lectures on alternative and complementary therapies at the SUNY Buffalo Medical School and at Cornell University. In 2008, Cook’s papers were integrated into the Sophia Smith Collection at Smith College. In 2011, she was accepted as a Reach the Decision Makers (Reach) Fellow within the University of California at San Francisco’s (UCSF) Program on Reproductive Health and the Environment.
Cook made the decision to study the field of midwifery after attending her first Loon Lake Conference of the Six Nations. Participants at the conference highlighted the crucial role that traditional birthing practices can play in helping Native women to gain control over their bodies. the control of reproduction was thought of as a means to assert Native sovereignty in itself. She had completed a spiritual midwifery training in The Farm situated in Tennessee in 1978. She was then following which she completed her clinical training in The University of New Mexico Women’s Health Training Program.

Katsi Cook was educated in a Catholic school boarding, but she started practicing tradition of the Longhouse Religion as a teenager. She went to Skidmore College from 1970 to 1972, before being moved into Dartmouth College as a part of the school’s inaugural woman’s class. Soon after, she quit school to take part within the American Indian Movement (AIM). She was married to Jose Eugenio Barreiro, a Cuban academic and activist for indigenous rights The first of their five children was born in the year 1975.
In the years 1972 through 1977 and between 1979 and 1982, Cook along with Barreiro worked in conjunction with in the Kanienkehaka Longhouse Council of Chiefs on Akwesasne Notes which was a daily publication that featured pieces from all over the country pertinent to or written about the Akwesasne community.
The St. Lawrence River that runs through Akwesasne and the reservation land itself are in proximity to General Motors (GM) plants and waste dumps. In 1981, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) announced that Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) had been found in the groundwater under GM property, and later in private wells on the St. Regis Mohawk reservation. Researchers from Mount Sinai had been taking samples from animals and soil on the reservation since the 1970s, though they had never checked how the environmental contamination was affecting community-members, notably breast-feeding mothers’ milk. This coincided with growing concerns in the community surrounding high numbers of miscarriages and birth defects, which have been shown to be a consequence of exposure to PCBs.
