Katja Suding (born 30 December 1975 at Vechta) was a German politician belonging to the Free Democratic Party (FDP). She was the chairperson of her party’s parliamentary section within Hamburg’s Hamburgische Burgerschaft from 2010 until 2017. After the national elections of 2017 she has been an elected part of the German Bundestag.

At the annual convention of the national party in the FDP in April of 2011 in Rostock, Suding was for the first time elected an official member of the executive board of the party under the direction of the chairman Philipp Rosler. The year 2015 saw her appointed as the deputy chairperson of the FDP (alongside Wolfgang Kubicki and Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann) This time, under the chairmanship of Christian Lindner.

Suding was a FDP delegate to the Federal Convention for the purpose of electing the President of Germany in 2012 and 2017. In 2016, she announced that she would leave state politics and instead run for a parliamentary seat in the 2017 national elections.

In the (unsuccessful) negotiations to form a coalition government with the Christian Democrats – both the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CSU) – and the Green Party following the elections, she was part of the FDP delegation.

Suding is a member of the FDP since the year 2006. From 2008 onwards, she is an active member of the Hamburg executive board of the state level of the FDP state executive board. In 2009, in the German federal election, she contested unopposed for the seat of Hamburg Altona. In December of 2010 she was nominated the top candidate for the FDP for 2011, the Hamburg state election in Hamburg. The FDP had not managed to secure an electoral majority in 2004 or elections of 2008, and polls of 2010 predicted between 3 and 4 percent. Under the leadership of Suding the FDP was able to regain its place in its former position in Burgerschaft with 6.7 percent of votes, giving it the most successful result since 1974, and granting them nine seats out of the 121. Suding herself was elected into the seat of Blankenese. Following the state elections her party’s parliamentary section appointed her chairperson. In addition, she was elected as a member of both the Budget Committee and the Audit Committee.
