Katie Skelly Biography

Katie Skelly is one of the most popular and richest Cartoonist who was born on February 5, 1985 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, United States. One of her first books she wrote her self-published Nurse Nurse in chapter-sized installments until Sparkplug Comics founder Dylan Williams agreed to publish the collection issues. Nurse Nurse was among the final pieces Williams published before she passed away in 2011.

Her work has also been featured in group shows, such as the 18+ exhibition in the Recspec Gallery in Austin, TX (2018); Speculative Skins at The Naughton Gallery (2018) From Panel to Panel X C/Overt Movement from Comicana at The Medialia Gallery in New York City (2014) as well as Karma-Con held at The Rubin Museum of Art (2012).

Currently living and working in Brooklyn, New York, Skelly’s forthcoming biographical graphic novel Maids, based on the lives of convicted murderers Christine and Léa Papin, will be published by Fantagraphics Books in October 2020.

In 2017, Fantagraphics Books published Skelly’s first hardcover graphic novel My Pretty Vampire, notable for its “dramatic colors” and “sense of mercurial motion”. The story is influenced to his love of the Italian movies of Dario Argento, as well as the earlier comics illustrations of Jean-Claude Forest, the story is about a young vampire who escapes the confinement of her brother only to find her true self through surreal, sensual and sometimes violent adventures in the contemporary world.

Curatorial notes for the exhibition count Japanese comics, bandes dessinée, science fiction and B movies from the 1960s and 1970s as inspiration for Skelly, who “examines exploitation genres for transgressive elements” in her work.
