The weather was abysmal in the NCAA District IV regional meet just two weeks later McGregor as well as her teammates could improve how they performed during the Big Ten meet, with McGregor finishing third while the Michigan team beating Wisconsin and claiming the regional title completely. Their win earned them an automatic entry into an NCAA Women’s Cross Country Championship. McGregor is the 3rd Wolverine finalist in the finals (placing the 39th spot overall) and helped her team to achieve seventh place at the end of the meet.
In the indoor track season that followed (1998) McGregor took home two NCAA titles, one on her own in the 3000-meter course with an average of 9:24.68 and the second time in the anchor leg of 1600 meters for the relay distance with a time of 4:38. I felt like I failed myself in 2004. But this time I did what I needed to do, and Amy ran well. I tried to put a happy face on it. You don’t want to be Debbie Downer and feel sorry for yourself. It’s not like I’m the only person to finish fourth.
