The rewritten versions, released during 1999 and in 2000 with another novel called Crown of Fire, were more religious in character and, in many markets, were advertised as Christian fiction, not science fiction. They were released in a single volume in 2004. The same time, Tyers was approached for the Star Wars market again and published a second novel called Balance Point, in addition to short stories for four Star Wars anthologies. Shivering World was updated and released in the early part of 2004.
The three Firebird novels were re-released in an annotated version by Marcher Lord Press in 2011, followed by two additional series novels: Wind and Shadow in 2011 and Daystar in 2012, completing the Firebird Saga.
Tyers remarried in 2014 and is active in the Presbyterian (PCA) church.
Despite her success, following the release of her novel One Mind’s Eye, Tyers was on a sabbatical completely from writing between 1994 and 1997. In 1997, she returned to writing with a focus on those from the Christian Booksellers Association as an effort to market Christian science fiction. Bethany House Publishers published rewritten versions of Firebird and Fusion Fire.

Kathy Tyers Gillin (nee Moore) was born and was raised in Long Beach, California. She earned a degree in microbiology at Montana State University, where she met her husband of a few years, Mark Tyers. After they got married she went back to university and was certified to teach classes from K-12. When their church started an independent school, she was able to take charge of the lower grades. The year 1979 was the time she took a break from teaching in order to begin the family. Her daughter Matthew began his life in 1981. she began writing after a few years.
Tyers published her debut book, Firebird together in collaboration with Bantam Spectra in the year 1986. She later released Fusion Fire (1988; a sequel to Firebird), Crystal Witness (1989) and Shivering World (1991). In the same time, she published a nonfiction travel guide together with her husband released two CDs of traditional music: Leave Her, Johnny and The Very Best Dreams on which she played flute as well as an Irish Harp. In 1991, as she was working on a second speculative-fiction novel she was offered the chance to create a story for the Star Wars Expanded Universe. The novel she wrote, The Truce at Bakura (1993) was a bestseller and made the New York Times bestseller list.
Tyers’ husband, Mark, died from alcoholism in 2004. She took another sabbatical from fiction writing, working with guitarist Christopher Parkening on his autobiography Grace Like a River. In 2006, she entered Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia, and after earning a Master of Christian Studies degree, she lived in Bellingham, Washington for a year before returning to Montana.
