Kathy Sinnott (nee Kelly; born 29 September 1950) is a disability rights activist and former politician. She was a member of in the South constituent of Ireland during the European Parliament from 2004 to the year 2009.

On the 21st of September, 2009 her son Kevin drowned in a swim incident in Georgia. Kevin was a final-year philosophical student in the Southern Catholic College in Dawsonville, Georgia.

In 2012, Sinnott campaigned against the Children’s Referendum, claiming it would “lock in” the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child to the Irish Constitution and claiming that a “child is six times more likely to die in care at the hands of the State, than in the care of their parents.” Her statistics drew criticism from Leo Varadkar who labelled them “incredible” and “made up.”

She is a former co-chair of the European Parliament’s Eurosceptic Independence/Democracy group. Sinnott was a member and Vice-President of the EUDemocrats – Alliance for a Europe of Democracies.

Sinnott was elected a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the South constituency in the 2004 European Parliament election. She campaigned on disabilityissues, euroscepticism, education, anti-abortion and social conservatism.

She is the secretary for The Hope Project, a charity which assists people who have disabilities. Sinnott started The Hope Project in 1996. She got married Declan Sinnott when they were at the age of twenty-one, and they had nine grandchildren (3 daughters and six sons) together. However, they are now divorced. The year 2000 was the time she filed an appeal to the court to require to the Irish government to provide a primary instruction for her child Jamie who suffers from multiple disabilities. In 2001, the High Court ruled that every citizen in Ireland was entitled under the Constitution to access a quality primary education, based on the need. The decision confirmed that this was a fundamental rights that was not influenced by the amount of resources available. The government didn’t challenge this High Court decision for children age 18 or younger, however, it successfully appealed the decision to those older than 18 years old in the Supreme Court.

She was previously a candidate in the general election of 2002 to be a member of the Cork South Central constituency and narrowly lost the fifth seat John Dennehy of Fianna Fail. When the count was conducted, she led at first by 3 votes, but was defeated 6 votes in two recounts. She was a non-winner in the subsequent Seanad Eireann Election, as she was selected by four independent sitting TDs. She lost 3 votes against an incumbent Fine Gael candidate. She was required to obtain an High Court judgment to allow her to be a candidate for the Seanad in the Labour panel.

On 8 June 2009 Sinnott lost her seat in the European Parliament. She received 30% fewer votes than in the 2004 European Parliament election.
