Kathleen M. “Kathy” Bernier (born on April 29 1956) is a representative of the Wisconsin State Senate representing the 23rd district. She was previously the Chippewa County Clerk from 1998 to 2011. In March of 2018, Bernier announced that she will run for the 23rd District in the Wisconsin State Senate, an open seat because of the resignation of Terry Moulton.

Bernier beat the incumbent Democrat Kristen Dexter in the November 2nd general election. Bernier was elected again in 2012 and in 2014.

After graduation, Kathy was elected Chippewa County Clerk. She served in the position until February of this year. Bernier was also the chairperson for the Chippewa County Republican Party. Bernier was trustee in the Village of Lake Hallie, as the liaison to the office of the Clerk/Treasurer and also served on the Lake Hallie police commission and the parks as well as recreation boards.

Bernier was born in Eau Claire to John and Marge (Ginder) Anderson and lived within Lake Hallie, Wisconsin. Bernier was a graduate of Chippewa Falls High School in 1974. She was married in September of 1977. While raising her kids she held a range of part-time and short-term jobs , such as waitress, certified nursing assistant or census taker. As a single parent, Bernier applied to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1993. She was accepted as a non-traditional college student and continued to work part-time to help pay for college. In May of 1998, she graduated with an undergraduate diploma in the field of political science. Bernier received a certificate in public management basics from the University of Wisconsin Green Bay.

Bernier was a supporter of the Budget Repair Bill (Act 10) in 2011. It obliges the state’s employees to pay 5.8 percent of their earnings to pay for pensions and contributing 12.6 percent towards their health insurance premiums and reduces collective bargaining rights for the majority of unionized public employees members.
