Katherine Ritvo is one of the most popular and richest Horse Trainer who was born on February 13, 1969 in Braintree, Massachusetts, United States. Ritvo was born on February 13 1969 in the home of Peter Petro and Mary Petro. Her family was active in racing horses, and she grew up within Braintree, Massachusetts. Parents owned racing horses and following several small business ventures her father bought the race track. The three brothers she had all established horses racing careers: Michael became a race trainer, and the brothers Louis and Nick were jockeys. Ritvo has jockey size being just 4’11” and weighing less than 100 pounds. She was employed by her father when she was a teenager as groom, attractive walker, and an exercise rider. She was a certified trainer at age 18. She has a nephew named Nick Petro, Jr. is employed by her in the present working as an instructor.

Ritvo suffered from cardiomyopathy. This was the cause of death for the brother of hers Louis at 38 years old as well as her father, who was 73 years old. She was plagued by uncharacteristic fatigue since 1998 and her condition was officially diagnosed in Januaryof 2001. She started taking medicine and was trained on a limited basis between 2003 and 2005. She trained with about 100 horses over that time, with 15 victories. But her condition began to deteriorate. She began only one horse in 2005 , and was unable to start any horses from 2005 until the end of 2009. In 2008 when she was 39 years old, Ritvo was put on a waiting list to receive an organ transplant. After a wait of seven months the organ was made available on the 13th of November 2008 and Ritvo was given her heart on the same day during an operation that took 17 hours. She was hospitalized throughout the last six months and prior to her operation, her doctors had assessed her to have only two weeks left to live. She was released from the hospital within seven days of the procedure. Then, she wrote a letter to the hospital that she wanted to pass on to the donor’s family, but she has not received a response from them. Ritvo has said that she would like the family of the donor to know that she is happy with her new heart but is respectful of their privacy.

In 2010, starting horses in 53 races for the year, she also took over the training of then-two-year-old Mucho Macho Man when her husband Tim stopped training horses because he began working as part of the management at Gulfstream Park. Working with owners Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, the horse ran in the 2011 Kentucky Derby. Ritvo was only the 14th woman to train a horse entered in the Kentucky Derby in the 137 years it had been run to that date, and the third-place finish of the horse was the best for a woman trainer in the history of the race. She kept her perspective: “I’m so proud to be in the Derby, but just to get up in the morning is amazing.” She next ran Mucho Macho Man in the other two legs of the Triple Crown, the 136th Preakness Stakes and the 143rd Belmont Stakes, where he finished sixth and seventh respectively. Only 13 women trainers had saddled a starter prior to the 2011 Preakness, and Ritvo was only the 10th woman trainer to start a horse in the Belmont. Mucho Macho Man had overcome his own health problems in order to race, including having appeared to be lifeless at birth. Comparing her own experiences to the horse, Ritvo stated, “From the moment I opened my eyes, I felt fantastic. He’s Mucho Macho Man and I’m Macho Woman.”

She raced Mucho Macho Man in 2012, when he won three graded stakes races. She ran horses in 48 races that year, hitting the board 19 times. Her highest profile race that year occurred when Mucho Macho Man was a close second by a half-length in the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Classic.

In the year 2000, she was born Kathy Petro, she grew up in a racing horse family in Massachusetts and was married to friend of hers, Tim Ritvo, in 1990. Kathy along with Tim operated an operation for training race horses in Florida before she became the sole owner as Tim was named to the management team of Gulfstream Park race track. The accomplishments were made in the context of being diagnosed with cardiomyopathy back in 2001 and receiving a heart transplant in the year 2008. Despite the drug regimen and the issues with immunity that transplant recipients have to deal with she continues to lead an ordinary life as horse trainer and has no indications of rejection to organs.
