Katherine Rose Downie, OAM (born 12 January, 1996) has been an Australian Paralympian. Kat first competed in Australia in the year 2011. Kat took part in Australia during the 2012 Summer Paralympics in swimming. She was a part of the Gold medal winning Women’s 34 point 4 100 free relay and the 4 100 Medley relay teams. Kat finished fourth in both her favorite events, 200IM and 100 backstroke.

Downie was able to swim when she was an infant/toddler at the age of a baby in Aberdeen Scotland. She started competing in 2007 when she was 10 years old. She made her debut as a representative of Australia during an international event in 2011. She participated in the 2011 Arafura Games. She competed at the 2012 Australian Swimming Championships and London Olympics Trials held in Australia at the age of 16. She placed 2nd in the individual 200m medley competition with the time of 2.34.21. Her personal best was a times in the 100m freestyle of 1.02.88 for the freestyle 100m. She also had a her personal record time was 29.03 during the 50m freestyle and the personal best in the 50m butterfly of 32.04 during the 50m butterfly. The women’s 50m reversestroke in a multi class competition, she placed second in the event with a time of 33.62. She was chosen as a representative for Australia during the 2012 Summer Paralympics. She was a part of the Paralympic goodbye ceremony in the Perth State Basketball Centre in late July. She took part in nine events and earned two gold medals while an athlete on the Women’s 4 100 freestyle and 4 100 Medley Relay (34 points) teams.

She was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in the 2014 Australia Day Honours “for service to sport as a Gold Medallist at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.” In 2013 and 2014, she was awarded Wheelchair Sports WA Junior Sports Star of the Year.
