The Lieutenant tells that tells of one the first moments of black-white relationships in Australia in the year of the first settlement, in 1788. Based on a source from the past Gadigal-language notebooks kept by Captain William Dawes – the novel is a story of a remarkable relationship. When he was studying how to speak the Gadigal spoken language with a girl in the early years, Dawes wrote down word-for-word sections from their conversation. Grenville has utilized these fragments as the foundation for a novel that explores what it could be like that two individuals cross across the gaps of the language and culture that divide them, and create an intimate relationship that is based on mutual love and respect. She describes it as an “mirror- image” of The Secret River.

In 1994 Grenville returned to the characters and setting of Lilian’s Story with a companion novel – Dark Places – that re-tells the events of the earlier novel from the point of view of Lilian’s incestuous father.
