Catapulted to stardom by their visual sensibilities, Haysi Fantayzee combined their extreme clothes sense – described as combining white Rasta, tribal chieftain and Dickensian styles – with a quirky musical sound comparable to other new wave musical pop acts of the era, such as Bow Wow Wow, Adam and the Ants and Bananarama. They appeared several times on the BBC Television programme Top of the Pops. Despite being touted by David Bowie’s producer Tony Visconti as the next big thing, the group quickly disbanded after releasing three hit singles “John Wayne Is Big Leggy”, “Shiny Shiny” and “Holy Joe”, and an album, Battle Hymns for Children Singing, that went gold.

Garner later returned to photography, painting, and video, and launching her successful career in the media arts that began by collaborating with Sinead O’Connor. In this collaboration, she produced memorable photos of her for her debut album in 1987, The Lion and the Cobra. Garner has since shot many stars and musicians like Dr. Dre, Eazy E Leigh Bowery JT LeRoy Angelina Jolie, Cate Blanchett, Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Cameron Diaz, PJ Harvey, John Galliano, Bjork and Kate Moss. Her work has been featured on The American as well as the British editions of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar as well as W magazine, Interview, i-D, The Face, GQ, Vanity Fair, Elle and The Sunday Times.

Garner was born to Wigan, Lancashire to Anne Philomena Shannon and George Sandeman Garner, a factory worker and a sailor. Garner was exiled from high school at 16 and then became an escaped criminal who became a member of The Children of God. To escape the clutches of the cult, she hitchedhiked from London across Eastern Europe to India in 1970. There she lived for one year as a traveling before being found in the home of her parents. She attended the art college at Blackpool in Northern England then relocated to London and started to photograph and even model for upcoming magazines like The Face and i-D.

Garner first became a part of the spotlight as a third of the avant-garde 1980s new wave pop group Haysi Fantayzee, along with other members Jeremy Healy and Paul Caplin. The group was born out of street art scenes like the Blitz Kids, which were popping out of London in the 1980s early on, Haysi Fantayzee’s music combined electronic, country and reggae with sociological and political lyrics that were presented in nursery rhymes.

She designed a wallpaper collection, which is archived at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and was in a touring exhibition with the Whitworth Gallery from 2010 to 2012.
