When a college friend liked his inking work, Karl Kesel began submitting his portfolio to Marvel Comics and DC Comics. Kesel’s debut work with DC Comics appeared in New Talent Showcase #4 (April 1984). Kesel soon was the inker for Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes — so fast actually, that he was convinced that the comic was being assigned to New Talent Showcase #8 as an experiment to test how well he could jelled alongside Tales of the Legion penciller Terry Shoemaker. Kesel was dismayed that inks that looked clean and smooth on the original pages turned out to be unwieldy in the comics printed And with some help from Dick Giordano , he learned the art of drawing in a manner that looked better on the paper. Kesel created the lighthearted “Mazing Man” series in addition to providing inks for drawings by George Perez on History of the DC Universe and John Byrne on Legends and Superman volume. 2. Together with his wife Barbara Kesel, he co-wrote an Hawk and Dove miniseries in 1988 that is illustrated by Rob Liefeld. Kesel along with the artist Tom Grummett are the creators of the current Superboy character, Kon-El who first appeared during the “Reign of the Supermen” story arc that began with The Adventures of Superman #500 (June 1993). A continuing Superboy series was developed by Kesel and Grummett in February 1994. The year 1996 saw Kesel together with Stuart Immonen created The Final Night limited series. The was the same year that Kesel is one of numerous creators who helped to write The Wedding Album one- shot. Superman: The Wedding Album one-shot, in which the protagonist got married to Lois Lane. Kesel also wrote his contribution to the Batman and Superman: World’s Finest 10-issue limited series (April 1999 to Jan. 2000) that examined the Post-Crisis time period of both with the ten issues occurring one year later than the previous. The artist and the writer Terry Dodson launched a Harley Quinn ongoing series in the month of December.
Kesel’s debut work on behalf of Marvel Comics was inking a Vision story in Avengers Spotlight #23 (Oct. 1989). He inked the cover of Mark Bagley’s art for Japan’s exclusive Super Famicom video game The Amazing Spider-Man: Lethal Foes in 1995. Kesel also wrote Daredevil issue #353-364 (June 1996 to May 1997) and, in 2002, was the author of the story “Remembrance of Things Past” where it was revealed the fact that Ben Grimm, the Thing of the Fantastic Four is Jewish. Kesel also wrote and drawn the “lost” Captain America comic strip from the 1940s , which appeared on Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited. He wrote an Hulk along with the Human Torch story which had been written by Jack C. Harris and drawn by Steve Ditko in the 1980s. The story is published through Marvel in the form of Incredible Hulk and the Human Torch The Human Torch: From the Marvel Vault #1 (August 2011).
In 2000, Kesel and his former Superboy collaborator Tom Grummett created Section Zero as part of the Gorilla Comics imprint at Image Comics. Gorilla Comics was intended to be a creator owned company financed by a comics related website, eHero.com. The website proved to be a financial failure, leaving the creators to personally finance their own books. Along with the other Gorilla Comics creators, Kesel and Grummett attempted to continue the series they started, but these efforts proved to be unsuccessful. In January 2012, Kesel announced that he and Grummett would be relaunching Section Zero as a webcomic on the Mad Genius Comics website. The previously published stories were posted on the site and new material was added as it was completed. A Kickstarter campaign in 2017 will allow Kesel and Grummett to finish the story.
