Karine Sergerie (born February 1 1985) is the woman’s world champion for lightweight (under 64 kg) Taekwondo. She is the first Canadian woman to be a world champion.

Sergerie was part of the three-member of the 2008 Canadian Olympic team at the Summer Olympic Games in Taekwondo together with Ivett Gonda as well as Sebastien Michaud. He also was a part of the team representing Canada at the 2012 Summer Olympics.

The year 2008 was the time that Karine reached the semifinals, where she faced Hwang Kyung-Seon in the race for her gold medal. The silver medal was Canada’s highest Olympic performance in the sport.

Sergerie is a native of Sainte-Catherine, Quebec, Canada. Her coach and father, Rejean, introduced her to karate at the age of five. Karate was her sport of choice between 1992 and 1998. He continued to coach her until she became interested in taekwondo following the fact that her brother had taken on the discipline. She has won six consecutive times as a championship at the national level (2002-2007).

Sergerie received the silver medal in the 2003 World Taekwondo Championships. Despite this achievement however, she was not able to qualify for 2004’s Summer Olympics because of a “contradiction in the selection process”. One set of rules stated she had to achieve a gold medal during the Pan-American Games to qualify, however, another set of requirements did not. While she did earn an Olympic bronze medal during the 2003 Pan-Am Games, the Taekwondo Federation of Canada declared that the bronze medal was not sufficient.
