Karin Mensah was born on 8 March 1965 in Dakar, Senegal, in an expatriate community called Cape Verdeans. When she was in the year 1975, she enrolled in at the School of Arts for Dance and Song in Dakar and began her professional singing in the theater and on TV at the age of 11. Her father was a major influence on her as she was a fan of classical music, and , even though it was a niche genre in Africa her childhood, she was enjoying Beethoven or opera.

She was part of the jury for her role on the Channel 5 television program Friends of Maria de Filippi, that was a show looking for new singers. At the same time she expanded her prior book and launched a new edition under another publisher. The attention generated from the show on television drove up sales for the publication. Alongside traditional music classes in various genres, the school offers a work with speech therapists to improve their diction. Mensah was aware of the importance of these kinds of interdisciplinary studies due to the fact that she struggled to learn languages and techniques after her move from Africa.

Karin Mensah (born 1965) is a classically trained vocalist born in Cape Verde, whose preferred style is jazz, as well as the traditional musical styles of West Africa. She is also a music teacher who has been the director and founder of the Accademia Superiore of Canto (Music Academy of Higher Education) in Verona, Italy, since 2004.

After completing her undergraduate degree after which she relocated to Paris and attended the University of Paris X-Nanterre, graduating with a diploma of modern language in the year 1988. She completed her graduate studies with the Orff Institute in Salzburg in the course offered in collaboration with the Societa Italya of Musica Elementare Orff-Schulwerk from Verona to master the educational method employing the Orff method. While there, she also studied musical theory in the Conservatorio Evaristo Felice Dall’Abaco (also called the Conservatory of Verona) and singing with Rita Orlandi-Malaspina as well as G. Mastiff, graduating in 1991. Then, she attended a variety of singing classes, including the introductory course with the Conservatorio Francesco Antonio Bonporti of Riva del Garda (1991) Basic performing along with Maestro Rossi Castellani in the Conservatorio Cesare Pollini [it] of Padua (1993) as well as singing techniques in collaboration with Niranjan Jhaveri in The Jazz- India Vocal Institute in Bombay (1998).

After her completion of school, Mensah recorded several songs in various genres including blues, chanson, funk, jazz, Latin, and the traditional morna style of Cape Verde. Some of these early releases included Morna de Cabo Verde (Azzurra – 2000), La vie en rose … et les plus grandes chansons françaises (Demetra – 2002), “Ayo” sung in Wolof in the collection Salsa Mundo, Cabo Verde (Azzurra – 2002), and Souvenirs de Paris (Brisa – 2005). She participated in the humanitarian project Capo Verde Terra D’Amore (Cape Verde Land of Love), which was a compilation of various artists in a series of five CDs, whose proceeds were donated to the World Food Programme (WFP). All of the artists involved in the project worked gratis so that the proceeds could go directly to African aid. Out of that project, Mensah created another album, Orizzonti, in which she sang the traditional Cape Verdean songs in Italian. In 2014, she released Lelio Swing based upon the music of Lelio Luttazzi. She worked with other Italian artists on the album, translating the French versions of songs, and adding Latin rhythms.
