Karin Housley (nee Locke; born on 20 January 1964) is an Minnesota politician, businessperson and a part of the Minnesota Senate. A Republican she is a senator from Forest Lake, Stillwater, as well as the region around St. Croix Valley. Housley was unsuccessful as the Republican candidate in the special election held in Minnesota’s 2018 to the United States Senate.
In 2010her first attempt to run for office in the public sector, Housley was narrowly defeated by DFL incumbent Katie Sieben for election to the Minnesota Senate. After redistricting put Housley’s house in a new district Housley was elected the post in the year 2012 beating her opponent by a mere one percent. Housley was elected to the seat again in 2016, beating the opponent with more than 20.
In 2014, Housley was selected by Republican gubernatorial candidate Scott Honour, a businessman from Orono, to be his candidate for lieutenant governor of Minnesota. The pair was defeated in the 2014 Republican primary.
In December 2017, Housley announced she intended to seek the Republican nomination in the 2018 special election for United States Senate. The seat was vacated by Al Franken, who resigned amid allegations of sexual misconduct. Tina Smith, then the lieutenant governor, was appointed by Governor Mark Dayton to fill Franken’s vacancy, and announced she intended to seek election to the seat. Housley won the Republican primary and was defeated by Smith, the Democratic incumbent, in the general election.
After having lived throughout Buffalo, Winnipeg, St. Louis, Calgary, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Toronto as well as Phoenix throughout Phil’s National Hockey League career, the Housleys relocated back to Minnesota in 2003. Karin along with Phil are parents to four kids who each graduate from Stillwater Area High School, and two grandsons. They live at St. Marys Point. Housley is the owner of a real estate company in Stillwater.

Housley is a native of and was raised at South St. Paul, Minnesota. Housley graduated of South St. Paul High School in 1982. She briefly went to Augsburg College before moving to Buffalo, New York after her high school lover, Phil Housley, was recruited to Buffalo Sabres. Buffalo Sabres. She attended The State University of New York in Buffalo which she completed in 1987 with the degree of B.A. in communication studies. After graduating, Housley worked as a news editor at WGRZ as well as WKBW in Buffalo from 1991 to 1991.
