Karim Abdul Razak is one of the most popular and richest Association Football Player who was born on April 18, 1956 in Kumasi, Ghana. Karim Abdul Razak Tanko (born 18 April 1956) is a Ghanaian football coach and former midfielder. He was a player for various clubs during the 1970s and 1980s, most notably Asante Kotoko, the club in Ghana’s locality Asante Kotoko as well as the New York Cosmos in the now defunct North American Soccer League (NASL).
Popularly known as”the “Golden Boy”, Razak was also a part of his country’s Ghana national team, and helped to take home the 1998 African Cup of Nations. Razak was named the African Soccer Player of the Year in the year.
In a 1999 poll held by the IFFHS to select the best footballers of the 20th Century, Razak ranked 31st among African players, and in 2007, he was selected as one of the 30 best African footballers of the previous 50 years by the CAF, through internet voting. In 2000, he had a short spell as an assistant coach of the Ghana national team. After leaving the Ghanaian side, Razak went to Mali, where he won the Malien Premiere Division and cup double with Stade Malien. The club did not lose any matches on its way to winning the title. In 2003, he was appointed the coach of Kumasi Asante Kotoko and helped the club win their first local league in ten years. He discharged of his post after the 2003–04 league season, eventually returning to Stade Malien for two additional seasons.
Razak was part of Ghana’s Ghana national team which competed in the 1998 African Cup of Nations as hosts of the tournament. He scored two goals that won the game one of which was with Zambia in the opening round, and a second to beat Tunisia by 1-0 in the semi-finals. The goal that he scored against Tunisia has been described by the name of “Golden Goal”. Ghana beat Uganda during the semi-final, securing their third title in the continental tournament. Much of this was because of his efforts to aid in helping Ghana achieve their first African Cup, Razak was named African Player of the Year a few months after, making him the second among three Ghanaian players to ever be awarded the award.

Razak was born in Kumasi to Alhaji Abdul Karimu and Hajija Ishatu. He was educated at Asem Boy’s School. He began his in the local youth soccer before moving towards Kumasi Cornerstones in 1972.
The year 1975 saw him made the move to Ghana’s top club, Asante Kotoko. After four years with Kotoko and during which time Razak became a member of Ghana’s national team, and won an award in 1978. African Footballer of the Year award. Razak quit Ghana in 1979 to join the New York Cosmos of the NASL in the NASL. There, Razak played alongside other former World Cup winners Franz Beckenbauer and Carlos Alberto.
In 1981, after spending almost two years at the New York club, the Ghanaian forward decided to return home, signing with his former club Asante Kotoko. After one year, he moved, this time to Al Ain of UAE, where he spent two seasons. Razak then signed with Arab Contractors of Egypt, where he spent the next two years of his playing career. before returning to Ghana for a third spell with Kotoko. After another five years with the Ghanaian club, Razak moved to Ivorian side Africa Sports of Abidjan, where he retired two years later.
