She has guided Red Thread’s efforts away from power politics towards self-advocacy. De Souza was the driving factor behind the formation of a survivors of domestic violence group of women who discuss their experiences, assist each other , and learn from each other. Since 2000 her efforts have been focussed on the issue of poverty, children’s rights, as well as domestic violence. To help women understand their rights under the law she revised the Domestic Violence Act into a booklet that’s written in a language that’s easy to comprehend. She works in conjunction with the judiciary and Guyana Police Force to educate and comprehend the complexities that surround domestic violence, constructing bridges for swift actions when incidents arise.
When she graduated with the bachelor’s degree the year 1980, de Souza continued her political work, forming an opposition to the administration and her employers. Although the charge of larceny was dismissed in the year 1985, after a long struggle to clean her name she was dismissed from her position and made an activist full-time. Since her opportunities for employment were restricted due to the allegations and subsequent arrests she was forced to depend on her family members for help. In 1993 she, along with others from the Working People’s Alliance (WPA) formed Red Thread, as a grassroots activist group to help women and communities in communities like the Afro-Guyanese, Amerindian and Indo-Guyanese communities. Initial efforts were focused on the issue of education and rights to political representation however, in 1993, de Souza disaffiliated with the WPA and became the full-time coordinator of Red Thread.

Karen de Souza (born 19 January 1958) is a Guyanese women’s and children’s rights advocate who works tirelessly to help victims, offer support and education to those who have been victims of violence. As the founder of the non-governmental organization Red Thread anti-violence campaigns, she has participated in the education for judicial officers. She also was a part of the process of drafting a law to prevent trafficking and violence. Her work has been acknowledged by both international and regional organisations.
De Souza began her career working in the office of the Prime Minister, Forbes Burnham, as a librarian assistant in 1974. In the next year, she started volunteering in the Guyana National Service (GNS) which was a non-profit organization that offered basic training and skills to youth who were not employed. She was taught electrical skills through the GNS and also taught classes in reading to the illiterate. She continued her studies in Guyana’s University of Guyana between 1976 between 1976 and 1977, while maintaining her job in the library and was active in the promotion of The Terror and the Time which is a documentary about British colonialism. She handed out political flyers that led to an ejection from her employer. In 1979, following an investigation to determine if Working People’s Alliance members had involvement in an arson incident Her home was scoured and she was arrested for theft for some documents found related to the GNS. De Souza had not previously been a member of the Alliance however, following her arrest she joined the group and was identified as a Marxist and was an active political participant.
